Most European divers took their first plunges in the Mediterranean.  This also holds true for the author of this book.  Regardless of how many times he may have travelled to distant tropical seas, Helmut Debelius always found his way back to the "Mare Nostrum" to study its marine life, as well as the Atlantic, from which the Mediterranean fish originate.  Debelius's experience have culminated in this book and its unprecedented number of fish species photographed in their natural habitat.
